Description

The Staff Nurse provides high-quality, individualized nursing care through expert assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role is dedicated to ensuring a safe, compassionate, and goal-directed environment for patients and their families. The Staff Nurse acts as a patient advocate, ensuring clinical excellence and safety standards are met throughout the perioperative process.

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Advocacy

  • Assessment & Monitoring: Continually assess and monitor the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual status of patients through direct observation and interaction.
  • Diagnostic Interpretation: Demonstrate proficiency in interpreting diagnostic measures, including lab results, radiology exams, and EKGs.
  • Care Coordination: Formulate and communicate individualized patient goals; utilize professional judgment to resolve clinical problems and advocate for patient needs.
  • Infection Control: Adhere to strict environmental safety and infection control practices to minimize nosocomial risks.
  • Documentation: Ensure all patient information and Center documents are recorded accurately, timely, and maintained with strict confidentiality.

Surgical & Technical Support

  • Perioperative Assistance: Prepare sterile supplies, set up instrumentation, and assist surgeons during procedures in accordance with Center policy.
  • Aseptic Technique: Maintain a sterile field at all times and perform correct counts of sponges and sharps according to safety standards.
  • Specimen & Wound Care: Assist in the collection and care of specimens, application of dressings/casts, and safe patient positioning/transfer.
  • Technical Versatility: Maintain readiness to assume the Surgical Technician role as required by the surgical schedule.
  • Decontamination: Oversee the proper decontamination of equipment, instrumentation, and supplies post-procedure.

Teamwork & Operations

  • Effective Communication: Maintain a positive, caring, and professional demeanor with patients, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Staff Development: Assist in the orientation and supervision of new employees to ensure clinical standards are upheld.
  • Resource Management: Efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to ensure cost-effective care without compromising quality.
  • Facility Readiness: Maintain expert knowledge of the location and use of all emergency drugs and life-saving equipment.

Experience & Educational Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.
  • Licensure: Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Connecticut.
  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in PACU or Operating Room nursing.
  • Certifications:
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required/preferred).
    • Evidence of ongoing continuing education in perioperative or perianesthesia nursing.
